Upper & Lower Koufonisi

The two Koufonisi islands along with several other small islands and islets belong to the island complex of Small Cyclades, a tiny waiting to be discovered Mediterranean paradise at the very heart of the Aegean Sea. The Koufonisi islands are very close to one another with a narrow 200m wide channel separating them. The Lower (Kato in Greek) Koufonisi is uninhabited, while the Upper (Ano in Greek) Koufonisi is a buzzing small community of local fishermen, farmers and hoteliers. When people refer to the Koufonisi they refer to the populated upper island.

Neighboring to the two Koufonisi islands is Keros, a now uninhabited island, which was a great religious, centre for the islanders of the Aegean Archipelago some five millennia ago. The two Koufonisi islands along with Keros make a small municipality of 336 people that is located in between the bigger islands of Naxos and Amorgos. The (Upper) Koufonisi is connected with Piraeus (the port of Athens) by boat with the trip lasting between five to nine hours depending on type of boat. In the summer period, Koufonisi is also connected with Rafina, the other port of Athens, and some of the other islands of the Aegean Sea. Further, the ferries Samos IV and Express Scopelitis sail daily to from the neighboring island of Naxos.

The Upper Koufonisi with a surface area of just 5.7 km2 has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece and is justly thought to be a hidden gem of the Aegean Archipelago. It is the smallest of the inhabited islands of the Cyclades. The few hundred locals of the island make their living out of fishing, farming and tourism. At the moment, Koufonisi offers fantastic value for money and is one of the most amazing summer destinations of Greece.

The Lower Koufonisi is located between the Upper Koufonisi, Keros and Schinoussa. It is even smaller than the Upper Koufonisi, with a surface area of just 4.4 km2 and has no permanent residents. It has splendid turquoise beaches, which can be visited by hired boats from the upper island. It is an untouched paradise that should not be missed.
